Black Girls Dive Foundation partners with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to launch an initiative encouraging young Black girls to explore marine science and diving.

In a groundbreaking partnership, the Black Girls Dive Foundation (BGDF) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) have launched a new programme with a powerful mission. This initiative is aimed at empowering young Black girls to pursue careers in marine science and diving, addressing the lack of diversity in the field. By providing hands-on experiences and educational opportunities, we aim to inspire the next generation of marine scientists.
Programme overview
The collaborative programme offers an immersive curriculum that actively engages participants in scientific research, scuba diving certification, and environmental stewardship. From underwater exploration to laboratory experiments, every activity is designed to spark their interest in marine science.
"Our goal is not only to expose our scholars to the wonders of marine science but also to empower them with the confidence and skills needed to pursue successful careers in this field," said BGDF Chief Executive Officer and WHOI Corporation Member Dr Nevada Winrow.
The program will provide participants with access to WHOI's state-of-the-art facilities and expert mentors. These opportunities are crucial for developing the skills and knowledge needed for a career in marine science. Dr Susan Avery, President Emeritus of WHOI, remarked, "By partnering with BGDF, we hope to inspire and equip these young women with the tools they need to succeed in this field."
Certification included
The program includes scuba diving certification as an essential component, enabling participants to explore underwater environments directly. This hands-on experience is crucial for understanding marine ecosystems and conducting scientific research. Jessica Adams, a diving instructor at BGDF, stated, "Diving opens up a whole new world for these young scientists. It’s an empowering experience that builds confidence and a deeper connection to the ocean."
The partnership between BGDF and WHOI aims to foster a sense of community and belonging among participants. By bringing together young Black girls with shared interests and ambitions, the program creates a supportive network that extends beyond the classroom. Dr Moore noted, "Building this community is key to ensuring these young women feel valued and motivated to pursue their dreams."
