Malaysia Hosts Two Diveheart/PADI Adaptive Diving Events in Accessible Tourism Initiative

Diveheart Malaysia, in collaboration with Mimpi Perhentian Resort, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Terengganu, University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Rotary Club and University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), successfully held its annual Diveheart event on 7–9 October 2024 in the Perhentian Islands.

Dive Industry News and Matters

The event welcomed ten hearing-impaired students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendidikan Khas Besut, Terengganu, many of whom had never set foot on a boat or an island, despite living near the coast of Besut. The students, accompanied by their teachers, explored the wonders of the underwater world in Terengganu through snorkeling and scuba diving, where they experienced the sensation of weightlessness. Dr Tengku Farah Kamilia, a lecturer in environmental and marine pollution at UMT, conducted a sharing session with the participants, highlighting the importance of marine conservation.

RHB Banking Group partners with Diveheart Malaysia

In its collaboration with Diveheart Malaysia, RHB Banking Group (through its subsidiary RHB Islamic Bank Bhd) has stepped up its sustainability efforts with an initiative to empower the special needs community. This initiative took place on 3 December 2022, in conjunction with International Persons with Disability Day, said the banking group in a press release.

Diveheart Malaysia is part of the US-based non-profit organization Diveheart in Chicago, which focuses on helping disabled persons become certified divers through the adaptive diving techniques specialty training of the Professional Association Diving Instructors (PADI).

RHB Banking Group’s managing director and chief executive officer, Mohd Rashid Mohamad, said the bank was the first banking group in Asia with its own team of employees who are qualified PADI Adaptive Techniques support divers.

Training Disabled Divers in Malaysia

Kids Scuba is a PADI 5 Star Dive Center in Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which strongly supports the Diveheart Program. Hj. Syed Abd Rahman, the founder and director of Kids Scuba and a PADI IDC Staff Instructor is currently the Ambassador for Diveheart in Malaysia. He oversees the special program designed for a person with disabilities (PWD) and special people that allows them to experience zero gravity underwater in a weightless environment. He shares his insights and perspectives here.

The objective of the program is to build confidence, independence and self-esteem in the lives of children, adults and veterans with disabilities through the sport of scuba diving, scuba therapy and related activities.

The purpose of the program is to provide and support educational scuba diving programs with PADI courses—such as the PADI Seal Team, PADI Junior Open Water and the Open Water Diver course—that are open to any child, adult or veteran with a disability, with the hope of providing both physical and psychological therapeutic value to that person.

Profiles & Interviews

X-Ray Mag: Tell us about yourself and the organization.

The IAHD was set up to help train people in scuba diving that weren’t able to go through the normal instructional methods with some of the major training agencies. We felt that was the wrong thing, so we wanted to introduce a method of teaching that would mean there was no exclusion for a lot of people that are excluded anyway.

Flemming Thyge

Diving with people with disabilities has become his life passion.

Profiles & Interviews

"To see the nervousness and uncertainty change to pure joy and euphoric smiles, when a person with a disability have conducted the first successful dive,... can move the most experienced diving instructor to tears”.

That´s how Flemming Thyge describes the emotion that has led him to dedicate much of his life to develop diving with disabilities worldwide.
