Developing the Mindset of a Successful Image Maker

Is underwater photography difficult? Actually, no—at least, not to any significant degree when compared with any other discipline of photography. Each single stage of creating an underwater photograph, if seen in isolation from the rest, is not so tricky. It is the sum of all its parts, as well as mastering the whole, which can appear confusing at times. It is often believed that professional photographers have “special secrets,” which make their shots stand out from the rest, but mostly, it is rather a question of following a proper mindset.

In terms of underwater photography, we can say that the mindset is the systematic approach to staying organized and getting the best out of our photo dives. If you, for example, tend to run around your hotel room, searching for your housing’s o-ring in the last stressful minutes before the departure of the dive boat, while at the same time, wonder about whether or not you have charged your strobe batteries (and where are those batteries, by the way?), you could definitely use a change of mindset.

“Abstractionism is an artistic experience that arose in the early 20th century … The term indicates those pictorial and plastic works that go beyond the objective representation of reality.” (it.wikipedia.org)

Generative Fill in Underwater Photographs

Artificial intelligence has been in the news lately, especially generative AI. It seems like every industry is trying to put this technology into their products, including image-processing apps. Michael Rothschild takes a closer look and gives examples in underwater photography.

The idea of generative AI (GAI) is that a system can produce text, images or other media in response to original content and/or prompts (user-supplied instructions to modify the process). Public versions such as ChatGPT or DALL-E are available for online use by anyone.

Sequential Shots

The transition from analog to digital cameras has been a boon for photographers, granting them unlimited shots and freedom of movement. These circumstances lend themselves well to the technique of shooting sequential stills. Underwater photographer Claudio Ziraldo shares his insights and tips on taking sequential shots underwater.

In the first decade of the 20th century, technological advances allowed the printing of photographs in magazines. Fashion photographs appeared for the first time in 1909, in the French magazine La Mode Practique.

Capturing Emotion in Underwater Photography

When immersing ourselves in the underwater world, we experience a flood of emotions—both in relation to the depths and to being in an environment that is not our own, in which we can almost fly. But our encounters with marine life excite us even more, especially with sharks, dolphins and huge shoals of fish, but also small and colourful nudibranchs, or microscopic shrimps. Cristian Umili shares his insights and tips on how to capture emotions in underwater photographs.

Many who start diving, want to share these emotions with family and friends who do not dive, and decide to start taking underwater photographs or videos. For the purposes of this article, I will focus on still photography.

However, it may happen that once we return home from a dive and review our photographs on a monitor, the images do not convey the emotions we felt at that moment they were taken. This might depend on a multitude of factors: the angle, shooting distance, lighting, composition or a wrong choice of lens.

Black and White Underwater Photography

People like color. Is any photographer not familiar with the delighted exclamation of the viewer: "Oh, this is so colorful"? This point also applies to underwater photography"

Some readers may surely be shaking their heads now, wondering what is the point of depicting a colorful underwater scene, or a sea creature, in black and white? While others might be quietly and stealthily whispering things about "fine art," since black and white photography is the only true "master‘s" skill, isn't it? The absence of "nice colors" in an image must be art, automatically, right? Well... no, not really, but a general potential does exist. It all depends on the photographer.

UW Photo: 15 Steps to a Leak-Free Housing

The lack of proper O-ring care and preparation are two of the main causes of camera housing leaks. Underwater photo pro and photography instructor Kate Jonker offers advice and tips to help avoid these problems, keeping your housing (and hence, your camera) in good shape.

When you prepare your camera housing for diving, follow these important steps to minimise the dreaded housing leak!

Step 1: Prepare your housing, unhurried, in a well-lit area, where you will not be disturbed.

Clean the O-ring

Step 2: First, you should remove the O-ring from the door of the housing, using the O-ring remover provided with your housing. Don’t pinch it with anything sharp that may damage it.

Wide-Angle Lighting: Six Simple Steps to Better Strobe Positioning

One of the biggest challenges to using strobes in underwater photography is positioning. In this article, Kate Jonker offers six simple steps to better strobe positioning for wide-angle underwater photography.

The aim is to get you thinking about where you are putting your strobes and where the light is falling—and to encourage you to try it for yourself. Play around and see what works for you (and your subject)! It is the only way to learn.

I am going to assume you have two strobes, with two arms mounted onto two handles on either side of your housing and that you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a wide-angle lens behind a dome port, or a compact camera with a wide field of view, and possibly even a wet wide-angle lens.

Selective Color in Underwater Photography

Selective color is a multi-step procedure in postproduction of images, allowing certain colors to be highlighted while removing color in the rest of the image. Underwater photographer John A. Ares gives us a step-by-step look at how one can use this unique effect to transform underwater images into artistic creations.

To do selective color, you must master two techniques: 1) black-and-white (B&W) conversion of color images (there are several methods to do this); and 2) layer masking in Photoshop.

For layer masking in Photoshop, four tools and actions are employed:

• Brush tool

• Setting default foreground and background colors

• Switching between foreground and background colors

• Layer Mask tool

The sudden rocking of our truck shook me out of my slumber. I struggled to focus on my watch. Has it already been one-and-a-half hours since we set off, after loading the tanks? Looking out of the window at the jungle trail sort of threw me deeper into my world of confusion. Are we going diving? Being based in tropical Asia, diving to me usually means swaying palm trees, sunny skies, and white sandy beaches. So the 20°C air and dusty jungle trail was at the total opposite end of the spectrum for me.
