Stone Wall From Mesolithic Era Discovered off Brittany

A submerged stone structure off the coast of Brittany has been identified as a 7,000-year-old human-built wall, offering rare insight into maritime societies during the Mesolithic–Neolithic transition.

Neolithic Stone Structures
Wrecks & Archaeology

Marine archaeologists working off Sein Island, western Brittany, have documented a large, stone-built structure lying several metres below today’s sea level. Detailed analysis confirms that the wall is human-made and dates to between approximately 5800 and 5300 BCE, making it one of the oldest known submerged constructions of its kind in Europe..

16th-Century Shipwreck Found at Record Depth off France

A remarkably preserved 16th-century merchant vessel has been discovered lying at a record-breaking depth of 2,567 metres beneath the Mediterranean surface.

Wrecks & Archaeology

The wreck, named Camarat 4, was located in March 2025 during a French Navy seabed exploration mission that employed an autonomous drone. Sonar detected a large object, and a remotely operated vehicle later captured high-resolution images of the site, revealing an extraordinary level of preservation. The vessel’s position and the clarity of the artefacts led researchers to describe the site as appearing “as if time froze.”

Marine Park Closes: The Troubling Legacy of Orcas in Captivity

A French marine park, Marineland, has shut its doors for good following a 2021 law that banned shows featuring marine mammals. This closure marks the end of a controversial chapter for the park, which had long been home to two orcas—Wikie and Keijo—the last remaining orcas in captivity in France. Yet, while the public bid farewell to the park with a final show featuring the orcas, it is crucial to remember the grim reality these animals have faced for most of their lives.

Orca show in Marineland
Ecology & Science

Wikie and Keijo represent the tragic fate of marine mammals held in parks for human entertainment. Their lives in captivity were limited and isolated, far from the expansive oceans they once could have roamed freely with their families. Known for their complex social structures and strong family bonds, orcas are highly intelligent creatures that typically live in pods, passing down knowledge and forming deep, lifelong connections. But for these orcas, their natural behaviours were denied, replaced by confined pools, restricted social interactions and repetitive performance routines.

The John G. McCullough was built in 1890 by the Union Dry Dock Company in Buffalo, New York, USA, on behalf of the Erie Railroad Lake Line company. At 1985 gross tons, the ship measured 77.72m long and 12.22m wide. Two boilers fed a triple expansion machine, located at the rear of the boat. The remaining space on the ship was used for freight.

It was an early morning departure for the Betico 2, bound for Lifou Island. Check-in was at 6 a.m. at the ferry terminal in Noumea, the main port of New Caledonia. With the maximum luggage allowance at 15kg, plus a 6kg carry-on, I had to come one day early to bring my 42kg of excess luggage as cargo (comprising dive gear and underwater photography equipment). As a diver, there is no other option! Flying also limits you to 15kg max.

New Caledonia: Jewel in the Southwest Pacific

Considered the longest continuous and second largest in the world, the reef systems of New Caledonia have some of the most diverse concentrations of reef structures on the planet, providing a home for a vast diversity of species, including 2,328 fish species. Travel & Trips

It really started as one hell of a trip. I had originally booked a return flight to Wallis and Futuna—west of Fiji and Tonga—in the central-western Pacific, which would transit through Nouméa in French Caledonia. Unfortunately, it seemed I had to make an official request to the COV (Commission des Vols) for a special permit, provide documents and then wait a month to get a confirmation—which I received precisely one week before I left France.

River Rhône in France

—Diving in the French river Rhône with European catfish

The Rhône is a large French river, which is 545km long. It flows from the Alps, across Lake Geneva and joins the Mediterranean Sea. Cloudy in appearance, as if to preserve her secrets, it is difficult to have strong views about this type of river

On one hand, we locals highlight the return of iconic species such as salmon—indicating an improvement in water quality—on the other hand, we denounce the pollution—PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)—found in the river. Moreover, because of this pollution, eating  fish from this river has been prohibited since 2007.

It was the year that Air Liquide, along with Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan founded 'La Spirotechnique'. This company conceived, designed and manufactured a range of scuba diving equipment, including some of the first commercially available regulators. Their first modern 'Aqua-Lung' or regulator was the CG45.
