Technical diver and human factors expert, Gareth Lock, held the inaugural Human Factors in Diving Conference in September—and it’s now available online.
The event featured world-leading speakers speaking on how applying human factors can improve diving safety, incident reporting and team performance.
The first-ever event of its kind, the conference provided a unique opportunity to share the knowledge and skills to make diving safer, more effective, and more enjoyable, by allowing divers and instructors to take more informed risks and reduce uncertainty.
The speakers highlighted how they have created positive change, sometimes when faced with significant challenges and how attendees could be inspired to create change in their own diving, diving operations or diving community.
Over the space of two days, 27 presenters from around the globe including Ashley Bugge, Professor Simon Mitchell and Diane Chadwick-Jones from bp held 30 presentations with more than 20 hours of content and now the recordings are available for you to purchase. The written proceedings for the conference will be available before 31 December 2021, acting as a formal record of the learning opportunities provided.
Feedback from the conference has been positive:
“This was a terrific conference, certainly the most engaging virtual conference I've attended, and while the diving-specific context and takeaways were terrific, the applicability to non-diving realms was a positive outcome I wasn't necessarily expecting.”
Gareth has written a book ‘Under Pressure: Diving Deeper with Human Factors’ which is THE textbook when it comes to applying human factors in diving and comes highly recommended.
He lives with his family in Malmesbury, Wiltshire and travels the world sharing his knowledge of how human behaviour can affect diving, facilitating ‘counter-errorism in diving’. Through his company, The Human Diving, Gareth trains high performance teams and speaks at conferences focused on diving, extreme sports and supporting teams in high-risk sectors.
As the Human Factors in Diving Conference was a global first, tickets sold quickly and is aimed at all divers from beginner open water divers to cave and CCR divers to commercial and military divers.
