Afghanistan: Diving Lakes in the Hindu Kush Mountains

In Band-e-Amir National Park, located high up in the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan, there are six incredibly beautiful mountain lakes with crystal-clear waters. Since visiting the place in 2014, underwater photographer and retired commercial pilot Frode Uhre had dreamed of diving there. With written permission from the Taliban headquarters in Kabul and air tanks from the market in Kabul, his dream came true.

In autumn 2019, I got in touch with Gul Hussain Baizada, a guide with Silk Road Afghanistan & Travel. He promised to try to help me find compressed air tanks in the country. I had planned to visit Afghanistan in the summer of 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to that.

My Most Unusual & Unexpected Dive: Contributors Picks

We asked our contributors what their most unusual or unexpected dive was and they sent us photos and tales of unique experiences under the waves, some involving interactions with intriguing species, others purely chance encounters or surprising discoveries. From the tropical waters of Indonesia, the Philippines, Marshall Islands, Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands, Kona in Hawaii and Cuba, to the subtropical waters off the eastern coast of Florida in the United States and Mexico's Los Islotes, to the temperate waters of South Africa, Japan and the Puget Sound in America's Pacific Northwest, to a freshwater lake in China, X-Ray Mag contributors share their favorite uncommon underwater moments.

River Rhône in France

—Diving in the French river Rhône with European catfish

The Rhône is a large French river, which is 545km long. It flows from the Alps, across Lake Geneva and joins the Mediterranean Sea. Cloudy in appearance, as if to preserve her secrets, it is difficult to have strong views about this type of river

On one hand, we locals highlight the return of iconic species such as salmon—indicating an improvement in water quality—on the other hand, we denounce the pollution—PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)—found in the river. Moreover, because of this pollution, eating  fish from this river has been prohibited since 2007.

Yellowstone

A volcano larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined, Yellowstone National Park is a geothermal hot spot that attracts more than four million visitors a year. Wildlife roam the landscape freely in this caldera defined by ongoing thermal activity. In this unique landscape, opportunities for exploration above and below the water line abound.

Yellowstone National Park is a remote wilderness. The closest major airports are six to eight hours away by car in Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado. I started the 24-hour drive from Texas at dawn with my buddy Doug Harder. We watched as flat plains in the Texas panhandle gave way to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. We completed our drive the first day as the moon rose and continued our journey the next day.

Florida Springs

Florida has a secret—albeit not a very well-kept one: it is home to some of the most exquisite freshwater environments in the world. The vast network of springs and rivers located throughout the central and northern areas of the state offer bodies of water with unusual and colorful flora and fauna. State parks across the region are home to many different types of springs from turquoise-blue gushing spring heads surrounded by deep basins to static-flow sinkholes filled with tannic water.

The Florida Springs are jewels. Overflowing with life, the springs offer refuge to a multitude of animals including reptiles, freshwater fish, migrating and resident populations of birds, and local Floridians. Filled with bright turquoise and gin-clear water, the basins of most springs are surrounded by thick vegetation and exceptionally tall trees, offering visitors a break from the concrete jungles located only a few hours away in cities like Orlando and Miami.

Florida's Blue Heron Bridge

The Florida sun was warm and high overhead as I donned my fins and slipped below the surface with camera in hand. A juvenile spotted eagle ray lazily glided away over the sand to avoid the impending intrusion of noisy bubbles and camera flashes. As I finned towards the shadows, I stopped to investigate a small male rosy razorfish in full breeding colors flitting about frantically, as I intruded on his territory. So consumed by the dance of the razorfish, I barely noticed the shifty dark mass in the distance making its way towards me.

As I watched, the mass grew larger and more ominous as it drifted closer. I was still unable to discern what it was. Finally, the blob came into focus, and I was able to make out hundreds of wing tips and flashing white bellies writhing in the shallows.

A school of cownose rays, oblivious to my presence, swirled around me in a full feeding frenzy. As the massive aggregation of rays moved on, I turned my attention—and new-found exuberance—back to the shadows.

Beneath the Waters of Balmorhea

For as long as I can remember I have had a fascination with aquatic ecosystems. Whenever I see a clear body of water, my immediate desire is to slip beneath the surface to explore what ever hidden mysteries it may hold. Even after 30 years of diving in freshwater, it seems I am still discovering something new on each dive. I am constantly on the look out for clear water containing native species of aquatic flora and fauna to photograph underwater.

When I travel, I always map a course that meanders around the country side to check out potential dive sites, especially sites that contain species of fish I have never photographed before. Such was the case in the middle of February 1996 when I went to visit friends in Alpine, Texas, and made a stop on the way down at Balmorhea State Park in Toyahvale, Texas.

Grotta Giusti

I felt thrust back a century or two, perhaps into the setting of the Count of Monte Christo. Lounging in the majestic sitting room, in the stately old mansion that now houses Grotta Giusti Spa but was once the seat and residence of a family from the Italian gentry, I cannot help but ponder the history these walls must have seen. Outside I can see the Tuscan countryside, with its rolling hills and slender stone pines. We are nowhere near the ocean. Yet I am just about to go diving—inside the mountain. In fact, I am about to go to Hell.

The spa gets its mineral waters from some hot volcanic springs that come out of the mountain right under the complex. From the ground floor, we go down a ramp that leads into a cavern draped in stalagmites and stalactites. After we pass through a curtain, it is already significantly warmer and quite humid. I am being told that starting from the entrance through to the deepest part of the Grotta, three different zones are crossed, each one increasing in heat, which some humorous tradition has been named Paradise, Purgatory and Hell.
