Lisbon Underwater Film Festival

The first Lisbon Underwater Film Festival (LUFF) has made a notable debut, positioning itself as a new gathering point for underwater filmmakers, explorers and ocean advocates. Held from 13–15 February 2026 at Lisbon’s historic Cinema São Jorge, the festival presented a diverse programme of films celebrating the ocean through storytelling, science and visual art.

Organisers say the event aims to bridge the worlds of filmmaking, marine science and conservation while bringing underwater cinema to a wider public audience.

DIVING talks

After taking part in all five editions, since the inaugural event in 2021 at the resort Troia, about an hour south of Lisbon, I have had a front-row view of the journey and evolution the conference has undergone. The core principles and format remain the same, emphasising talks and meaningful socialising with both presenters and fellow attendees during the conference days. The pleasant pace and atmosphere, as well as the top-notch catering, remain the same.

Graciosa: Delectable Diving & Dining in the Azores

The idea of the Azores has always conjured up images of dreamy, windswept islands of vivid green set against a backdrop of stormy blue waters. With limited knowledge of diving in the area, I had only heard of big animal sightings off Santa Maria Island during a very short season. But what about the rest? Isolated in the northeastern Atlantic, these islands had to be home to something spectacular, so I was keen to visit.

Porto Santo: Relaxation, Great Food & Fantastic Diving

Porto Santo Island, the northernmost island of the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean, is known as a golden oasis with turquoise waters. There is a variety of diving to be enjoyed, from wrecks to rocky reefs with diverse marine life, as well as great food and a relaxed atmosphere. Brandi Mueller shares her adventure there.

Rising early to walk Porto Santo’s 5.5-mile (9km) golden sand beach, the air was cool and crisp. It was light outside, but the sun had not yet risen over the top of the island, so the beach was still draped in shadow and not too hot. The temperature was perfect for a stroll, and as I looked out over the still waters, the whole island seemed to be at peace.

Autumn Trade Shows: Diving Talks and the DEMA Show 2024

This fall’s two events could not be more different. The former is an intimate conference centred around presentations and discussions with leading speakers, as well as socialising and good food, while DEMA is a huge, intense trade show where you run around frantically for four days in an attempt to meet as many people as possible. Here is a summary.

Diving Talks

We will take them in chronological order. Diving Talks, held in late October, has quietly become one of my top favourites. This year’s event was the fourth in a row, and since I have reported extensively on the previous editions here in the magazine, which you can easily go back in the archive and fish out this time, I will limit myself to an update and not repeat all the premises and characteristics of this unique event.

My first glimpse of Madeira from the plane was of jagged cliffs and lush green terrain against a dark blue backdrop. Although my knowledge of this Portuguese island was limited, I could not wait to explore it.
