Be it equipment, technique, physiology, photography or biology, divers have the ability to study to their personal level and interest. One aspect that is often overlooked by most divers is the history of diving.

The UK has a rich resource when it comes to this subject. Indeed the Historical Diving Society (HDS) was formed in the UK in 1990, and has subsequently grown into an international organisation with members and offshoot societies around the world.

Crew Named For 'Project Poseidon'

Saturation diving is a standard method of working in the commercial diving world. Divers live in a pressurised environment or 'SAT system' for many weeks. Once their work duty has finished the divers are decompressed to surface pressure over a period of hours or days.

Today SAT time is limited in many countries. In Norway the maximum bottom time is 14 days and the diver needs to be offshore no more than 21 days. Meanwhile in the British North Sea the time in SAT (including decompression) is limited to 28 days. However there is no limit on statutory offshore time, hence the diver can remain offshore for a number of days before being transported back to the mainland.
