Porto Santo: Relaxation, Great Food & Fantastic Diving

Porto Santo Island, the northernmost island of the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean, is known as a golden oasis with turquoise waters. There is a variety of diving to be enjoyed, from wrecks to rocky reefs with diverse marine life, as well as great food and a relaxed atmosphere. Brandi Mueller shares her adventure there.

Rising early to walk Porto Santo’s 5.5-mile (9km) golden sand beach, the air was cool and crisp. It was light outside, but the sun had not yet risen over the top of the island, so the beach was still draped in shadow and not too hot. The temperature was perfect for a stroll, and as I looked out over the still waters, the whole island seemed to be at peace.

Autumn Trade Shows: Diving Talks and the DEMA Show 2024

This fall’s two events could not be more different. The former is an intimate conference centred around presentations and discussions with leading speakers, as well as socialising and good food, while DEMA is a huge, intense trade show where you run around frantically for four days in an attempt to meet as many people as possible. Here is a summary.

Dive Industry News and Matters

Diving Talks

We will take them in chronological order. Diving Talks, held in late October, has quietly become one of my top favourites. This year’s event was the fourth in a row, and since I have reported extensively on the previous editions here in the magazine, which you can easily go back in the archive and fish out this time, I will limit myself to an update and not repeat all the premises and characteristics of this unique event.

An Italian Wreck Valley

In the waters of the Strait of Messina and the Grecanica Area in Calabria, Italy, there are many shipwrecks and submerged artefacts dating from ancient to modern times, with more still to be found. Andrea Murdock Alpini takes us on a journey of discovery to several wreck sites in the area and their history, as well as a beautiful underwater cave.

The water is warm and clear. The landscape is barren. The sun is high above the horizon. The blue waters of the Strait of Messina await technical divers eager to discover new sites. Stories of the Strait’s endless stretches of sand, rocks, legendary shoals of fish and many shipwrecks are waiting to be told. It is a sea of discovery.

MPAs in Liguria: Expedition to Protect the Mediterranean Sea

Climate change, ocean warming, impacts on marine biodiversity and the importance of marine protected areas (MPAs) prompted Greenpeace Italy to embark on an expedition to Liguria in late June 2024. Valentina Di Miccoli, a marine biologist on the expedition, tells the story.

The mission to Liguria included several dives in various areas along the coast. We did not have many days, so we needed to stay focused, as there were many things to do, people to meet and interviews to conduct. In Savona, I met up with Lorenzo Moscia, the photographer for the mission. He had been there for a few days documenting the biodiversity of Bergeggi Island, an MPA established in 2007.

Sesimbra in Portugal

Along the coast of Portugal, just south of Lisbon, is the Arrábida National Park, founded in 1976. It protects an area on the southern part of the Setúbal Peninsula that covers 175.41 sq km (68.11 sq mi) of land and sea. Brandi Mueller shares her adventure in Sesimbra, which borders the marine preserve that hosts a plethora of marine species.

Home to over 1,400 species of marine life, the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park was included in the Arrábida National Park in 1998 and is completely protected from all human activities, allowing it to recover from previous degradation. No fishing, boating or even diving is allowed in this area.

Just next to this protected area is the village of Sesimbra. While fishing, boating and diving are allowed here, it reaps the benefits of being adjacent to such a successful marine reserve and where the diving is known to be excellent.

EU countries to establish large marine protected area in the Mediterranean

In order to comply with EU targets on the protection of the sea and biodiversity, Italy’s environment minister said that an agreement is in the works to establish a large marine protected area (MPA) in the Mediterranean.

“An agreement is being finalized with France, Spain and Cyprus for a large protected area in the extra-territorial waters of the Mediterranean, which is a great contribution to the 30×30 goal,” said Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Italian environment and energy security minister at the Valore Natura conference in January 2023.

Aircraft Wrecks of Gran Canaria

For over a year, I had been looking forward to a very special expedition that was planned for May 2014. But as you know, life does not always go the way you plan. The expedition was postponed, and once again, I had to find an alternative, at relatively short notice.

Wrecks & Archaeology

After getting some interesting offers in March 2014, I met a rebreather diver from Gran Canaria at the Dive and Travel Show in Madrid. He suggested that I come to Gran Canaria for wreck diving. At first, I was not particularly interested, because I really wanted to do some nice wreck dives, and the Canary Islands were not necessarily known for their wealth of wrecks. I had been to Lanzarote a few times, but I had never seen any interesting wrecks there. On the contrary, I was told again and again that there were no wrecks anywhere on the Canary Islands.

Cyprus

In the far corner of Europe, in the Levant and almost wedged in-between Asia Minor, the Middle East and Northern Africa and at the crossroads of the same, Cyprus offers a nourishing mix of varied diving, culture and cuisine. Lelle Malmström and Peter Symes went to check it out.

Lelle and I surely got our fair share of all the above in an action-filled week in the sunny island country of Cyprus, which saw us dive and explore different ends of the South Coast. Aside from some good dives, we also had some lovely land excursions, including a day spent up in the hilly, green wine country, wandering ancient streets while sampling the local cuisine in style.
