As divers, we are often reminded of what is being lost.

We witness coral bleaching, ghost nets, declining fish stocks and degraded coastlines. News about the oceans can sometimes feel overwhelming, as though the problems are so vast that individual actions no longer matter. Yet one of the striking things about the diving community worldwide is that this assumption is increasingly being proven wrong.

A new European research initiative is exploring whether scuba diving could help support mental health and emotional well-being among younger generations. Early findings from the Erasmus+-funded One Health Underwater project indicate that regular divers aged 18 to 29 report notably higher well-being indicators than broader European mental health trends.

The project is led by the French Federation for Underwater Studies and Sports (FFESSM), together with DAN Europe and HE2B, and combines research into health, sport, inclusion and environmental awareness.

Few individuals have influenced public understanding of nature more than David Attenborough. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Attenborough has become one of the most recognised and respected voices in environmental storytelling, bringing the wonders of the natural world into homes across the globe.

Today, 8 June, marks World Oceans Day, an international day dedicated to raising awareness about the ocean’s role in sustaining life on Earth and the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems.

Observed worldwide through beach clean-ups, educational programmes, scientific events and public campaigns, the day brings together governments, conservation organisations, divers, researchers and coastal communities around a shared focus on ocean health.

Oxygen minimum zones, or OMZs, typically form at depths between 200 and 1,000 metres — often overlapping with the ocean’s twilight zone. Here, oxygen levels drop so low that many animals cannot survive for long. Fish avoid these layers if they can. Larger predators skirt their edges. Only specially adapted organisms remain. 

The remains of the USCG Cutter Tampa have been located off the coast of Cornwall, more than a century after the vessel was sunk during World War I.

The cutter was lost in September 1918 after being torpedoed by a German U-boat while escorting a convoy in the Bristol Channel. All 131 crew members on board were killed, making it the deadliest loss in U.S. Coast Guard history.
