In November 2015, it was announced that the Women Divers Hall of Fame and DAN America had teamed up to launch a five-year grant that acknowledged key decompression research conducted by Dr RW 'Bill' Hamilton.

Hamilton was the principal investigator of the NOAA Repex Oxygen Exposure tables to assist divers in avoiding oxygen toxicity

At the time of the announcement, the grant was scheduled to run until 2020. It is not known if this is the last time this grant will be issued.

The year-long US$10,000 DAN / RW 'Bill' Hamilton Dive Medicine Research Grant supports new or ongoing research projects in one or more of the following areas:

  • Development of decompression procedure techniques for commercial, military, technical and/or recreational divers
  • Development of new decompression models
  • Probability of risk or probabilistic modeling
  • Multi-gas dive simulation
  • Dive computer procedures, protocols and testing
  • Treatment of incomplete decompression and resulting incidents

The Prince of Gases

Bill Hamilton died in 2011, aged 81 after spending a lifetime conducting research into diving physiology, decompression safety and the treatment of injured divers. He authored numerous papers, reports and workshop proceedings. He is perhaps best known for co-developing the Diving Computational Analysis Program (DCAP), a computer program that analyses and develops decompression procedures and schedules for a wide variety of exposures to pressure.

This legacy helps fund and promote research that builds on Bill’s work

"This grant was established to support the next generation of researchers studying diving physiology and advanced decompression procedures” stated Dr Petar Denoble, DAN Vice President of Research.
