Tom Ingram Announces Retirement from DEMA
After more than two decades leading the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association, Tom Ingram will retire at the end of 2025, marking the close of a distinguished career in dive industry leadership.
Tom Ingram, President and CEO of the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA), has announced his intention to retire at the end of 2025. The decision brings to a close more than two decades at the helm of the world’s largest trade association for the diving industry and over 45 years of service to the sport and business of diving.
According to DEMA’s official statement, Ingram will continue to lead the organisation through the transition period while the Board of Directors initiates a search for his successor. His retirement will officially take effect following the 2025 DEMA Show.
A long and dedicated career
Tom Ingram joined DEMA in 2002, bringing with him extensive experience from both the manufacturing and education sides of the industry. Prior to joining the association, he held leadership roles with Scubapro and Aqua Lung America and served as an educator in diving business management.
During his 23 years with DEMA, Ingram has overseen the organisation’s transformation from a show organiser into a comprehensive trade association representing all sectors of the diving world—from manufacturers and retailers to training agencies, dive centres and tourism boards.
Under his leadership, DEMA has strengthened its advocacy and research programmes, expanded industry marketing initiatives, and guided the organisation through challenging times, including the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Statement from Tom Ingram
Reflecting on his tenure, Ingram said: “It has been my privilege and honour to be part of DEMA and this industry. I have so many to thank for the opportunity to serve in this position—the DEMA Board of Directors, volunteer leaders, committee members, the professional DEMA staff, the DEMA Show Management team, and, of course, the DEMA Members.”
He added: “During my 23 years at DEMA, I have been proud of the work we have accomplished together, including overcoming economic downturns and industry challenges. I expect this trajectory will continue, and I look forward to watching the organisation’s continued success in the years ahead.”
The DEMA Board expressed its appreciation for Ingram’s long-standing commitment and confirmed that a formal leadership transition plan is already in motion.
A lasting legacy
Over the course of his career, Ingram has played a pivotal role in uniting the diving industry around shared goals of safety, education and growth. His vision helped reinforce the DEMA Show as a global meeting point for professionals and established new channels for research and public outreach promoting diving worldwide.
He has also been a strong supporter of diver education, environmental awareness and cooperation between media, manufacturers and the diving community.
At X-Ray Mag, we have had the privilege of working with Tom over many years—through interviews, shared initiatives, and numerous DEMA Shows. His professionalism, good humour and steady leadership have left a lasting impression.
We extend our sincere thanks and gratitude for his collaboration, insight and unwavering commitment to advancing the dive industry. We wish Tom a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement—with many more opportunities to enjoy the underwater world he has done so much to champion.
