In memoriam

The diving community is mourning the loss of Zale Parry, one of the sport's true pioneers, who has died at the age of 93. Best known to many as the female face of the classic television series Sea Hunt, Parry's influence extended far beyond television. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, she helped shape recreational scuba diving through record-setting dives, equipment development, underwater photography, education and tireless advocacy for the oceans.

A pioneer beneath the surface

Born in 1933, Parry began diving in the sport's formative years, when equipment was primitive, and few women entered the underwater world. In 1954 she set a women's skin-diving depth record of 209 feet (64 metres), became one of the earliest female scuba instructors and helped develop one of California's first civilian hyperbaric chambers for treating injured divers. She also tested early diving equipment and worked extensively as an underwater photographer and stunt performer.

Her appearances in Sea Hunt introduced millions of television viewers to scuba diving during the 1950s and 1960s, helping to inspire a generation of divers. She later co-founded the International Underwater Film Festival, served as the first female president of the Underwater Photographic Society and remained an active ambassador for diving throughout her life.

A lasting legacy

Parry was among the inaugural inductees into the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2000 and established the Zale Parry Scholarship in 2006 to support students pursuing careers in undersea exploration, marine conservation, hyperbaric medicine and diving technology.

Paying tribute, the Women Divers Hall of Fame described Parry as "one of diving's true pioneers", saying that "more than her accomplishments, Zale will be remembered for the doors she opened for those who followed."

Diving journalist Rosemary "Roz" Lunn called her "a force of nature", adding that "her influence can still be seen every time a diver slips beneath the surface."

Marine conservationist Cristina Zenato described Parry as "the First Lady of Diving", writing that "her legacy will live on" through the generations of divers she inspired.

Zale Parry belonged to the remarkable generation that transformed scuba diving from an experimental pursuit into a global sport. Her achievements helped open doors for women in diving and left an enduring mark on underwater exploration, education and conservation.
