Contextual advertising places promotional messages alongside editorial content related to the same subject, helping advertisers reach readers already engaged with the topic.

Contextual links are commonly found embedded in articles on news sites, Wikipedia pages and on a large number of pages that have been optimized for search engines. They are used to reference additional information about a topic or a keyword phrase.

Contextual advertising

Contextual advertising allows companies and organisations to place relevant promotional messages alongside editorial content that relates directly to their products, services or destination. These placements appear within articles whose subject matter aligns with the advertiser’s offering, reaching readers who are already actively exploring that topic and helping them discover useful industry information related to it.

Unlike standard banner placements, these options associate advertising messages with specific topics and articles, providing readers with useful industry information while maintaining a clear separation between editorial and sponsored content.

To preserve editorial independence and transparency, all promotional placements are clearly identified and visually separated from the editorial text.

Banner Advertising

Banner ads can be placed alongside individual articles or within sections that are relevant to a specific topic.  The sample banner shown on the left is a 160 × 600 pixel “wide skyscraper” format.

Rates

Banner campaigns are typically sold for a defined period.  These banners appear in a contextual environment related to the article topic and remain visible for the duration of the campaign.

160 x 600 pixel banner:
  6 months:  USD 189 / EUR 189
  2 years:     USD 349 / EUR 349

120 x 240 pixel banner:
  6 months:  USD 95 / EUR 95
  2 years:      USD 175 / EUR 175

Note: Contextual banner placements are already included at no extra charge in some of our campaign packages. Please see those packages for details. For campaign options and pricing, please contact us.

Sponsored Information blocks

Sponsored information blocks provide a way to present a short promotional message within an article while remaining clearly separated from the editorial content.

These blocks appear between sections of an article and are clearly marked as sponsored content. They may include a short text, an image or logo, and a link to an external website.

Sponsored information blocks are suitable for:

  • product announcements
  • destination promotion
  • training agencies or services
  • equipment launches
  • industry partners wishing to provide additional information relevant to the article topic

Each placement is manually inserted and remains permanently associated with the article. Because X-Ray Mag articles remain accessible in our archive for many years, sponsored information blocks can continue to provide visibility long after publication

Rates

€150 when combined with an active banner campaign
€250 per placement

For availability or booking, please contact our advertising team.

Maximum 500 characters, including one highlighted backlink. A small logo may also be included.. (Sample below)

-- Sponsored message --

Here's 500 characters: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Mauris feugiat sollicitudin velit, eget pellentesque.  Highlighted Backlink.  Suspendisse lacinia dictum consectetur.

House rules

Acceptance of sponsored placements is at the discretion of the editors at any given time. X-Ray Mag only accepts links that are relevant to our niche and originate from quality websites.

Why no contextual links inside editorial text?

The main issue is that these links look like editorial judgement rather than advertising. That creates two risks.

Editorial credibility

Readers assume that links inside the body of an article were inserted by the editor because they are relevant sources. If they are paid placements, the distinction becomes unclear and may undermine trust in the editorial.

For a publication like X-Ray Mag, whose authority depends on credibility within a specialist community, that boundary is particularly important.

Regulatory considerations

In the EU, advertising must be clearly identifiable. This comes from the EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and national marketing laws.

If a paid link is embedded naturally in editorial text, it can easily be interpreted as native advertising without disclosure, which regulators increasingly scrutinise.

Contextual placements are limited in number in order to maintain editorial balance.
