Now CMAS—the World Underwater Federation—has decided to endorse the 2020 Diver Medical Screening system.

Mark Caney, who serves on the European Underwater Federation Board (EUF) stated "This is a historic step. The bulk of the world’s professional diver training agencies already use the 2020 medical because of their alignment with RSTC. Now, with CMAS also adopting it, it means that most of the world’s diving federations can also use this invaluable resource. This will be the first time the same medical screening protocol has been agreed by both these sectors of the world’s diving community."

This is certainly a smart move by CMAS, because this Federation was going to revise their medical documentation. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, CMAS has voted to adopt the 2020 Diver Medical Screening system, because it is a reliable way of dealing with a medical.

Dr John Guerts, CMAS Medical commission stated "by co-ordinating the medical examinations and making it accessible for research and consultation, another important step has been taken to make diving safer."

A Strong Medical Form

The new diver medical is a strong, user-friendly document for many reasons.

• It is currently available in 25 languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional versions), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai and Turkish
• It is a living document - there has already been an amend to the diabetes question
• It has a provision for divers who have suffered from COVID-19
• It is in plain, simple, non-ambiguous language
• It was written by an international team of diving doctors, with expertise in various sectors
• It now stops unnecessary diver medicals from being conducted
