A manufacturing defect in certain Apeks second stages can restrict breathing-gas flow at depth. Divers with affected regulators are being told to stop using them immediately.
Apex Safety Recall
Apeks has recalled certain XL4, XL4+ and Ocea regulator second stages after a manufacturing defect was found that could restrict the supply of breathing gas at depth.
The UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has classified the issue as presenting a serious risk of asphyxiation. The recall affects regulators with serial numbers 250402212 to 260402893, manufactured between April 2025 and April 2026.
Gas flow can be restricted at depth
According to the OPSS notice, a manufacturing defect in the second-stage spindle assembly can restrict breathing-gas flow at depths exceeding 45m. As a result, the regulator may be unable to deliver sufficient gas when demanded by the diver.
The recall covers various configurations of the XL4, XL4+ and Ocea, including primary second stages, octopuses and complete regulator sets.
North American authorities have issued corresponding recalls. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that no incidents or injuries have been reported and identifies the remedy as replacement of the affected valve spindle assembly.
Check the serial number before diving
Divers with an XL4, XL4+ or Ocea second stage should check its serial number. The number is laser-etched on the side of the regulator.
If it falls between 250402212 and 260402893 inclusive, Apeks advises that the regulator must not be used until it has been inspected and, where necessary, repaired.
Affected regulators can be returned to the place of purchase or an authorised Apeks service centre. Inspection and any necessary repair using approved replacement components are being provided free of charge, including shipping.
