In May Korseai Institute of Historical and Archaeological Research successfully hosted its conference at the New Acropolis Museum! The event highlighted the ten-year journey of underwater archaeological research in the Fournoi archipelago (2015–2025) and showcased key collaborations in preserving and promoting Greece’s maritime heritage.
In the crowded " Dimitrios Pandermalis" amphitheater of the New Acropolis Museum, the conference and press conference of the " Korseai" Institute of Historical and Archaeological Research concluded on May 15, 2025, attended by journalists, politicians, and municipal representatives. The press conference featured four presentations that detailed the comprehensive findings of the underwater archaeological research conducted in the Fournoi archipelago over the past decade (2015-2025), along with collaborations with various organizations aimed at promoting the underwater cultural heritage of Fournoi - Korseon and outlining future initiatives.
The event was introduced and welcomed by Georgios Didaskalou, the Secretary General of Culture at the Ministry of Culture and Sports; Dimitrios Kourkoumelis, the Deputy Head of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities; Andreas Fiorentinos, the Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization; Emmanuel Koutoulakis, the Secretary General of Aegean and Insular Policy at the Ministry of Shipping; Konstantinos Moutzouris, the Governor of the North Aegean; and Dimitris Karydis, the Mayor of Fournoi Korseon. Additionally, Mr. Sotiris Skiadaresis, the President of the Chamber of Lefkada, was present at the event.
The Director of the Archaeological Research of Fournoi and Assistant Professor of Underwater Archaeology at the University of Thessaly delivered a thorough presentation on the findings from the initial phase of exploratory research at Fournoi (2015-2018). He elaborated on the results and technical challenges encountered during the systematic excavation of the late Roman shipwreck at Aspro Kavos in Fournoi.
The Technical Director of Research, Vasilios Mentogiannis, in his address titled " Marine Cultural Heritage as a Pillar of Development for Fournoi Korseon," articulated the existing and prospective synergies for the establishment of diving parks and accessible underwater archaeological sites in Fournoi, as well as the developmental opportunities that lie ahead.
Antiquities conservators Angelos Tsompanidis and Irini Mitsi examined the conservation protocols implemented in the management of excavated archaeological materials from the decade-long Fournoi research. Additionally, senior archaeology student Loutsia Papalaiou from the University of Thessaly addressed the critical issue of training and practical experience for students involved in the Fournoi research, focusing on techniques and methods of underwater archaeology that equip the next generation of underwater archaeologists.
The press conference concluded with inquiries from journalists, the distribution of printed informational materials, and extensive discussions during a small reception in the lobby of the Acropolis Museum.
